Jennifer Adesina was frustrated. After the text message she had sent to Susan Ekerette was delivered, the woman’s phone seemed to have fallen back into the network black hole from which it had briefly emerged. No subsequent calls or text messages were going through and theyoung lady was about to give up and just take Cherish to her home. She supposed itwasn’t entirely the fault of the girl’s mother; she had not been informed that the flight time had changed. The parents of the other two children had been waiting at the airport and had since left with their children. One of the teachershad left as well, hitching a ride with one of the parents. Jennifer could tell from the impatience in Mrs Benson’s eyes that the other teacher was itching to leave as well.“I guess you should go, Mrs Benson.” She suggested, when the woman shuffled her legs and sighed at her wristwatch for the umpteenth time. “I’ll wait here until I can get through to Cherish’s mother. Her phone network seems to be really bad.”“My mummy uses MTN. Like she says, their network is everywhere you go- except where and when you really need it to be.” Cherish giggled, flashing the gap in her front teeth at the two women.

They both chuckled and Mrs Benson hesitated, frowning. “It would be nice to gohome and rest, but I could wait a little bit longer with you both.”“Oh no, no. It’s perfectly alright, ma.” Jennifer insisted. “I don’t mind waiting by myself for a while. Worst case scenario, I’lltake her home with me. You have a family and an impatient husband waiting for you.Don’t keep them waiting.”Mrs Benson rolled her eyes. “Impatient husband? At this my age?”Jennifer grinned. “I meant he must be impatient for your delicious cooking. Whatdid you think I was referring to?”The older woman laughed and shook her head, then hugged Cherish and Jennifer before leaving.

Jennifer watched the way the woman tiredly dragged her box behindher as she made her way through the crowd of people waiting for the next flight to arrive. She was glad she had told the other woman to leave. Mrs Benson looked like she really did need to rest. She settled down in the metal seat beside Cherish and tried Susan’s phone number one more time, frowning when the call refused to connect again. She turned and smiled at Cherish, who had a storybook open on her lap.“I guess it’s just you and I now, Cherish.” She sighed, smoothing the little girl’s hair back, and looking around the airport arrivals lounge where they were seated. “Unless by some miracle…”She stopped talking abruptly, eyes going wide.

The miracle had just walked into herline of sight, but she didn’t know if it was really one.

She cursed under her breath asthe man turned and saw them, and then waved. After the last uncomfortable incident at the school with Cherish’s father, Mr Asuquo Udofia was literally the last person she had hoped to ever see again.** **Susan felt suddenly tired of pretending she didn’t want to see Michael. Heaven knew she had been haunted with memories of the both of them making lovesince she had last seen him, and he was the first and last thought on her mind every day. But it made no difference that she was finding it hard to get him off her mind. She had no choice. He was not hers to fantasize about.“Let me be, Michael.” She said tiredly, rubbing her forehead. When she looked upat him, her eyes glistened with unshed tears. “Fine. What we had wasn’t just some mistake, some frenzied sex that we can just pretend never happened.

At least, it wasn’t like that for me but whatever it was, it’s over now. It has to be. Just go away and let me be. Go to your wife, Michael Davies.”“She’s gone.” Michael said, holding Susan’s eyes with his own. “Uyai has gone.”Susan simply looked at him, his words tumbling in her ears. Gone?“She left the next day after you saw her, Susan. And I’ve been trying to call you to tell you just that, but you’re so stubborn and…” Michael paused and took a calmingbreath. “D--n it, Susan, why are you so difficult?”Susan could feel her emotions surging towards the light at the end of the tunnel he had just showed her, but she clamped down on her feelings. She ignored his last question and addressed the heart of her anguish. “And so what if she’s gone? She’s your wife, Michael. She can and probably will show up again later and then…”“Even if she shows up, she would be wasting her time.” Michael said firmly.

He sat on the chair opposite Susan and tried to take her hands in his, frowning when she tugged them away. “Trust me, Susan. Uyai doesn’t have me under her thumb anymore.”Susan scoffed. “Then you’re a blind fool. I don’t think you know the power of her typeof beauty…”“Yes, I do Susan. Only too well.

When she left me, I almost went mad, so yeah I knowhow strong her power over me is. Was.”Susan stared into his face, and dark eyes ringed by beautiful long lashes stared back into her soul. “What changed?” she asked softly.“You.” he replied and reached for her hands again. This time she let him hold her. “I made her sign divorce papers before she left, Susan. I don’t want her ruining what we have.”Susan’s mouth went dry and she ached to ask him exactly what they had. She knew what she wanted, but after just one night of passion, were they on the same page? She opened her mouth to ask, and her handbag vibrated against her leg. Distracted, she leaned over and rummaged in the bag, straightening up with her phone. Her brow furrowed as she saw the missed calls and text message notifications drifting across the phone screen.“Excuse me, I have to read this…” she muttered as she swiped the messages open, relieved when she saw the messages were from Cherish’s teacher. Her relief quickly turned to confusion, and then alarm. As her eyes took in the last text message, her hands went cold.“Oh my God, Michael! Asuquo has my daughter!”
