Michael hesitated for a long moment, and Susan felt her face begin to get warm. Hadhe missed the subtle invitation in her words? She wondered if her voice had been too low and if she would have to repeat what she said. She didn’t think she could dredge up the bravery required to doit again. And if it turned out that he had heard her but was preparing to reject her offer, she doubted she would survive the embarrassment. When he remained unmoving in the darkness, his quiet breathing the only thing crossing the cold space between where he stood and where she lay in the bed, she took in a shaky breath and decided to save face.“I guess we could just stay on opposite ends of the bed and just…”Her words were silenced as he moved quickly. The next moment his warm body was inches away from her, burrowing under the duvet beside her. She caught her breath as he slipped a hand around her and pulled the length of her body against his.All her concerns about her ex-husband and the men after him disappeared as he pressed closer to her. They might as well have been naked. Her flimsy t-shirt was no barrier as the nubs of her b-----s prickled with arousal and pressed against his hard chest. She closed her eyes to relish the feeling of a male body pressed against her prone body. Since she had separated from her cheating ex, she had denied herself the pleasure of intimacy with the opposite sex, concentrating all her time and energy into raising her daughter and creating a good reputation career-wise. Over the years she had managed to ignore her natural desires butin an instant, melting body straining against Michael’s taut frame, she was once more pliant and soft, a willing woman in the arms of her lover. When she opened her eyes, Michael claimed her soft lips with his.** **The next morning, Michael woke her up with seeking lips again. They made love ata gentle pace, hands roving over places they had gotten to know intimately the night before.

The frenzied coupling they had indulged in during the first two bouts of lovemaking, a result of two people who had denied themselves release for a long period, was a memory they nibbled on gently as they gave each other pleasure, their quiet cries barely rising above the sounds of the new morning and the hum of the air conditioner in the hotel room.An hour later, Susan found herself smiling as she washed herself under the shower faucet. The jets of water ran along her body, mimicking Michael’s tentative touch which had quickly grown urgent. She was surprised to find that she felt none of the usual morning-after regret. It had felt natural, but most importantly it had felt right; she knew making love to Michael had not been a mistake. If anything, she felt a bit shy. When she returned to the chilly room, he greeted her with a knowingsmile and a kiss on the forehead. Althoughhe said nothing, his body language spoke volumes; he held on to her as though he never wanted to let her go. She felt her heart melt under the affectionate attentionhe was showering on her. They didn’t need words; wherever what they had started led to, she would follow, she vowedto herself as she hugged him tightly. Maybe it was time to open her heart to theidea of love again.

The feeling of euphoria stayed with her as they left the hotel, hands entwined, discussing their options. With daylight hadcome reality; they had to face the problems that had led them to the hotel in the first place. She settled into the front passenger seat of his Honda and swallowed a smile as she turned to look athim.

Even though every time their eyes met, she felt like pressing her lips against his, she managed to restrain herself.“I think we should go to my home briefly.” He suggested, cupping her cheek as her eyes widened in alarm. “I know, I know. MrUdofia and co know where I live. But we can go in through the back. I just need to get a few things; I can’t go around today in the same clothes I wore yesterday.”Susan hesitated, wondering if it was the right time to tell him she had decided to goto the police despite his advice to the contrary. She decided to keep the decisionto herself for a little longer; there was no point in tainting the feeling of good will between them. She could tell him later.

After all she had him to herself the whole day.She would remember that thought as they slid into his house through the back door about thirty minutes later. She had barely registered the sparse neatness of the small kitchen which they had walked through after he securely locked the backdoor behind them when she heard him gasp. He had walked into his living room and she hurried after him, heart pounding.“Michael, what’s wrong?” she whispered, eyes darting round as though she expected Samson Udofia and his men to jump out and abduct them immediately. But Michael was merely staring fixedly in the direction of his front door.

When Susan followed his gaze, she gasped too. The front door was slightly ajar.“Only my mother and I have the keys to that door.

And I spoke to my mother last night, so it’s definitely not her.” Michael said grimly in a low voice, his eyes movingtowards the dim corridor that led to a staircase in front of him.“Someone’s in my house.”
