Samson’s eyes widened and he exchanged a look with the other policeman. Susan’s heart raced faster. She clutched her handbag, which she was still holding, tight and her fingers dug into her alms painfully. What did that exchanged look mean?“Your daughter Cherish, right?” Samson asked.Oh God, they even know her name,Susan thought frantically.Samson saw panic flare in her eyes and he made a calming gesture. “Easy, madam. As far as we know, your daughteris okay. We’re here for something totally different.”Susan stared at them in confusion, her fear subsiding just a little. “Okay, then, what’s this about?”“It’s about your husband, Mr Asuquo Udodiong.” The second policeman said.“Ex-husband.” Susan corrected reflexively.

She frowned at them. “Well, this is a strange way to receive notice of a court case for child custody.”The policemen exchanged another look and Susan kicked herself mentally. She was volunteering too much information; it was obvious the child custody comment had taken them by surprise.“You and Mr Udodiong were battling for custody of your child?” Samson asked.Susan decided to change the subject and keep her cards close to her chest. “I’m sorry; I still don’t know why you are here.”Samson nodded. “Fair enough. You may have noticed we don’t look like regular police, that’s because we are part of the anti-kidnapping police squad, Susan.”“Kidnap?” Susan said, shocked. “Are you sure this isn’t about my daughter..?”“I promise you it isn’t, Susan.” Samson said reassuringly. “But unfortunately, it’s not such cheery news either.”She waited them out, her fingers twisting the handle of her handbag, breath held as she waited for the bad news.READFG, NLC At WAR Over N18 000 Minimum Wage, N23 000 Bag of Rice“It’s Mr Asuquo Udodiong, your ex-husband.” The other policeman said grimly. “He’s missing.”** **Susan couldn’t stop shaking after the darkblue police jeep left. She shut and locked all her doors, and curled up on her living room floor, using her daughter’s teddy bear to elevate her head as thoughts ran furiously through her head. The police had found Asuquo’s jeep abandoned in a deserted bush path after his current girlfriend reported him missing. His wallet and phone had been found close by, but no other traces of the missing man had been found. The text messages from Susan had led the policemen to her, as they had little else to go on. The conclusion was that the man had been kidnapped; Asuquo was a wealthy man and a prime target for such acrime. The problem was that although the police had only come around to ask her a few routine questions about Asuquo, they had left with a lot more. They knew she had been worried her ex-husband was going to try to get full custody of their daughter, they also knew about the quarrel they had both heard a few weeks ago.

Her neighbours had been very helpful, Samson had said. Which directly translated to the fact that her neighbours happily told the police everything they knew about Susan; which included Michael’s visits, and more importantly, thenature of the fight she and Asuquo had had.She shuddered as she remembered when the other unfriendly policeman had asked her the most troubling question of all.“Is it true that you threatened to kill your ex-husband, Miss Ekerette?”The question explained why the police hadbeen so interested in her and Michael. They had no leads in eth presumed kidnapcase, and the fact that she had threatened him when they argued was too huge for them to ignore. She wondered who had told the police that she threatened Asuquo.“Nancy.” She muttered to herself with a groan. The pregnant woman had overheard her use the threat on her ex-husband that fateful day. Now, the police were interested in her and Michael, who her neighbours had no doubt told the policemen was her boyfriend and possiblepartner-in-crime.She had not seen or spoken to Michael since Cherish’s math lessons ended, but she was sure she would be hearing from him soon. The police had told her they would be going to see him after they left her.

It was unpleasant being the centre of an investigation by the Nigerian police; she hoped he would handle it well. They would probably not be as gentle with a male suspect. After the police left, she had called Eka and told her everything. Her friend had advised her to retain the services of a good lawyer at once and she had taken the advice and already scheduled a meeting with one the next day.The only good news was that Cherish wassafe and doing splendidly in the maths competition. She had called Miss Jennifer Adesina to speak with her daughter and had almost cried when she heard the small, familiar voice of her excited child. When her doorbell rang, she almost jumped out of her skin. Her mind filled with scenes of the police returning to drag her off in handcuffs, in full view of her nosy neighbours. When she opened the door, the last personshe expected to see was standing there, hands in his pockets.“Michael.” Susan gaped at him.He said nothing, staring back at her.

Her eyes drank in his handsome looks; he wasdressed casually in sneakers and jeans and a light sweater gripped his shoulders flatteringly. His eyes bored into hers and she had to remind herself to breath. After not seeing him for a while, his magnetism was hitting her with full force and she found herself almost as affected as she had felt the first time she la!d eyes on him.He nodded and walked past her when she stepped aside. She closed her front door, meekly following him in. she expected himto be angry at her; after all, she had inadvertently put him in the police mess they were in.When he stopped and turned, she rushed into her excuses.“Michael, I’m so sorry for the situation I’veput you in.

If I had any idea things were going to go wrong like this, I would not have…”Her nervous speech was cut off as Michael took a few steps forward and reached where she was standing. He pulled her toward shim and in one instant their bodies were moulded together. Susan gasped at the feeling of a male body so close to hers; she had not felt thatconnection in years. Michael felt right, like she was meant to be in his arms forever. Thoughts of the police, her missing ex-husband and even her daughter faded from her mind as he leaned close and captured her mouth with his.At that moment, Michael had become her entire universe.
