Oga Martins - Season 2 - Episode 13

Martins had taken some vital steps in ensuring Ada’s betrayal didn’t go unpunished. First he let Deji in on the misadventure and the role Aisha seems to be playing in the unfolding drama. Martins was accustomed with reporting such matters to Deji because it was the trend back then during their undergraduate years when Deji was somewhat acclaimed an expert in crisis management and resolution among their circle of friends in Ibadan-Poly. He always had a way of breaking the ice in every matter concerning his friends.

Also, Martins brought the matter to the notice of the Human Capital Executive of his company and he had also reported to the head of the customer service unit. It was midday on a work-saturated Wednesday. Martins was finding it pretty difficult finding his bearing at work.

Martins was alone in the office though he wasn’t bothered about that. He needed the quietude so he could strategize. However, he didn’t enjoy his solitude for too long before Lola entered the office in her usual disoriented mode only this time she wasn’t with her partner in crime- Tinu.
“Martins, what is this I am hearing? Ada stole you client?”

Martins is surprised word had gone out already when he only just officially reported the matter in the morning.

“Martins are you not the person I’m talking to abi why are you acting like a deaf and dumb sombori?”

“Look Lola, I’m short of words and I ‘m sure you have all the answers you need already. I talked so much about the issue this morning that I’m nursing a headache at the moment”

“You are lucky it’s just headache you have, If I hear say this kain thing happen to be ehnn! Na hypertension go kill my enemy. Wetin I go say dey worry me self for Ada to collect client for my hand? Na only person like you that kain thing fit happen to.”
“Well, I’ve learnt my lessons. Once beaten, twice shy”

“Wetin be that one? Don’t tell me you are already conceding defeat?”
“Of course I’m not”

“You had better not oh! Because that babe own don dey too much for this company” . Lola had not finished her statement when Ada walked into their office”
“Lola how far?” Ada asked.

Lola immediately turned away from Martins in a bid to hide the fact that she had been gossiping about her boss
“Ah boss! Good afternoon” Lola responded pretentiously

“Haba Lola, we only just spoke some minutes ago now” Ada said in way that suggested foul play

Lola slammed her palm against her fore-head in embarrassment

“I must be suffering from amnesia”
“I guess you are” Ada added
“Well, you are the boss. I can decide to greet you anytime we see” Lola tries to regain composure

“I hear. Hope you haven’t forgotten our gist sha? This one that you don’t remember we spoke earlier” Ada said absen tmindedly
“Of course not, it hasn’t gotten that bad”
“Fine, I just thought I should remind you. I want to get to the bank.”

“Alright “
Ada turns to leave but had not reached the door when she suddenly stopped on her track to address Martins.

“So Martins you went ahead to report the matter to the HR. You seem not to realize I have so much influence in this company.”
Martins looks into space ignoring Ada like she was a toddler trying hard to recite nursery school rhymes

“You want to play ball with me right? Bring it on”

Ada stormed out of the office banging the door behind her.

“Lola what was that?” Martins asked disappointingly.

“Pardon?” She feigns ignorance
“I mean you acted like a snitch there.”
“Oh, really? Well, in this life you have to strategize and re-strategize all the time to stay relevant.”

“I don’t get you.” Martins appears lost. “ Look, are you with me on this or you are with Ada?” Martins asked.
“Ogbeni, what are you talking about?”
“Are you in Ada’s camp?” Martins reiterated

“Is there a camp here? Look Dude, My Pastor, Pa Adegboye tells me there is only one camp and it is located at km 46, Lagos-Ibadan expressway. So I don’t know the one you are talking about. Ada’s camp? Where is that?”

“I see this is all a joke to you”
“Martins, this life’s quest is the survival of the fittest. If you can’t beat them, then you join them. I’m sorry Martins, I can’t be a pigeon when I was born an eagle.” Lola reclined into her seat having made her point clear.

“If you can’t beat them, you join them.” Martins echoes Lola’s words. “I‘ll be damned! I should have known better. This war was lost even before it began.”
