Sharon - Season 2 - Episode 23

We hanged around the school much longer as she refused to go with the school bus after much persuasion from me and Miriam which fell on deaf ears. She insisted she was going to trek with me and know where I lived which wasn’t a great idea to me. Jenny didn’t come to order her like before, I guess she already knew that Sharon wouldn’t heed or she was ashamed to look at my face after all her prophecy had turned out to be fake. I even asked Miriam to tell her to come by herself when she was returning to the bus because I really wanted to look into her eyes and smile but, unfortunately she didn’t show up. Me, Sharon and Chidimma played around the field till Chidimma’s mother came to pick her up. The outlawz were still hanging around so, I still waited too. When Sharon came back from escorting Chidimma to her mum’s car, we both sat in silence staring into the now empty field.

“It was quite a boring term you know”. She spoke up after a while and I shrugged.
“A poor one too”. I added and she frowned at me.

“How was your result?”. She asked curiously and I shook my head.
“I don’t know yet, I don’t even want to look at it”. I said and she smiled then caressed my hand.
“Why don’t we see it together then? It doesn’t change anything, does it? “. She asked smiling at me, I stalled for a while and sighed before I brought it out then handed it to her.

“Well it does change something”. I said to her.

“What’s that?”. She asked me opening the brown envelope.
“Last time my dad grounded me for two weeks and banned me from all electronics. Who knows what it’d be this time”. I explained and she smiled at me.
“Really? Well you can’t always tell”. She said handing me my slip, and I collected it and peeked. To my utmost surprise I got fifth, I know it wasn’t my best performance but, I never expected to rank that much that term after all my unseriousness with the studies and my incomplete notes which were effects of losing Sharon. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it, you could tell with the way my mouth was a jar.
“Not that poor now is it?”. She asked and I shook my head in unbelief.
“No you don’t understand. This is not my result”. I protested in joy and she scoffed.
“Really? Well that’s your name written boldly up there”. She pointed out.
“I even got C in mathematics? How did it happen?”. I asked no one in particular and she laughed.

“Yeah i was surprised with my result too”. She said smiling at me.
“I’m sure you Aced everything”. I said and she shrugged.
“Won’t like to see for yourself?”. She asked handing me her result envelope too. I opened it and she performed better than I did, she got third. I was happy for her but another part of my mind was somehow pestering me.

“She does better without you”. That part said. She definitely was, we quarreled for a whole term and she got her best score.
“Third? You got third? You dumb girl”. I teased her and she riled up immediately.
“Did you just call me dumb?”. She asked and pulled out her shoe to beat me and I ran while she chased me. I stopped after a while and she whipped me with her shoe repeatedly till she got tired then she stopped and we sat down on the ground there trying to catch our breath. Soon Kelvin and the others were set to March. I tried again to persuade her to go separate but she refused. So, we all got going. Nine boys with one girl and that girl is my girl. She held me as we walked of course and always tried to get involved in anything we talked about. But we hardly talked about anything because she was with us. When we got to the place where we normally seperated, She still wanted to come with me but I refused, Kelvin and the others gave us space to talk.

“You should board a bike here Sharon, or join Bully and Kingsley”. I pleaded and she laughed.

“You just like pushing me away”. She said.
“That’s not what am doing…”
“Then you should have known why I came all this way with y’all was to know your house”. She said and I giggled.
“To know our house, really? Okay you’d get to know our house but, the time’s not right yet”. I assured her and she stared at me for a while before saying something.
“The time’s not right for you to know my house either right?”. She asked with her arms folded to her chest and I sighed exhaustedly.

“We’d get to that too I prom…”
“Whatever. Are you coming to my Birthday party?”. She interrupted me with a question, and I frowned.

“Your birthday?”. I asked confusedly and she frowned.

“You don’t know my birth date, do you?”. She asked and I shrugged.
“Do you know mine?”. I asked her too.
“You bet I don’t? Enough, you coming or what?”. She asked and I sighed.
“Which day is it?”.

“7th”. She said and I chuckled.
“The seventh that’s past already or January?”. I asked.

“Yeah it’s past but we’re celebrating it on Sunday. So?”. She informed and I became mute. There was no possible way I’d convince my mum not to talk of my dad to let me go to hilltop for my friend’s birthday. Non of my siblings have ever attended someone’s birthday before and I wasn’t expecting to break the record anytime soon. She sighed out loudly when I couldn’t say something.

“Well well, your silence says it all. You’re not coming”. She said calmly trying to hide her disappointment but I knew she was.
“I’d really love to but….”.

“It’s okay Godson I understand. Your parents won’t let you”. She cut in and held my hand and I smiled.

“Well it doesn’t mean you won’t keep my cake?”. I said and she shrugged.
“Actually no cake reservation for any one”. She winked and I frowned.
“Even your boyfriend?”. She brought her face closer to mine and whispered to ear.
“Even my Dad”. She whispered and I laughed.

“Now I can live with that”. I said and started walking backwards and she frowned.
“No hug for me I guess”. She said and I laughed.

“You’re a freak you know?”. I said moving towards her again.
“No you’re the freak”. She said and approached me too.

“We’re still waiting here”. Kelvin shouted.
“Same here”. Bully added from his own stand and we both laughed, then hugged.
“Don’t miss me too much”. She whispered in my ear.

“I won’t”. I said to her as we broke the hug and she frowned.

“Really? Well i will”. She said looking into my eyes and I smiled.

“I mean we could always chat over the phone now, that’s if I still remember your number”. I joked and she hit my arm so hard that I winced.

“That’s for being a jerk”. She said then pecked my cheeks and ran towards Bully and Kingsley.

“We were both jerks you know? It’s unfair”. I screamed at her and she turned and winked at me before they started leaving.
“Don’t worry man she’s in good hands”. Kingsley assured me as I still stood there watching them leave but, I already knew that. The truth is I was missing her already that I wished she lived next door to me.

“Remind me how you woed this girl again?”. Melody voice startled me but I caught myself.

“I don’t even remember”. I said and walked up to Kelvin and the others with Melody trailing behind.
