I also smiled at her too but, non of us had said any words to the other yet.

“How’s the head?”. She finally asked to break the silence and it kind of helped me regain my speech.

” well I can’t say yet. But the painkillers I drank this morning is still working “. I said as I sat down on a seat close by. She came close and viewed my head a little then folded her hands.

” you’ve changed the bandage and the injury is clean “. She said.

” yeah, thanks to my mum”. I said and she smiled. We both stared at each other again in silence, I wished I could just muster up the courage to ask her out there but, I didn’t even know what to say to her to start with.
“I didn’t get the chance to say I’m sorry yesterday”. She said feeling remorseful and I shrugged.

” Neither did I get the chance to say thank you”. I said and we both laughed. We were soon interrupted by the noise outside as the students and the school band started the National Anthem.

“Oh we should get going”. She said as she stretch Her hand to draw me up but I folded my hands.

“No, you should get going”. I said and she frowned.

” why?”.
“Nothing, I just can’t go out there”. She came and sat close to me with a confused look on her face.
” you’re scared? “. She asked.
” sort of “. I responded then she held my left hand in her two hands.

” About yesterday, you didn’t do anything wrong. Right?”. She asked again and I smiled.

“We got into a fight with some people.

That doesn’t sound right, does it?”. I replied her with a question too, I didn’t even think twice before telling her. We became quiet again, by now they had started praise and worship, after that the principal will take the stage.
” hiding in class wouldn’t change anything, if they are going to punish y’all “. She advised.

” I don’t even care about the punishment Sharon, I just can’t stand in front of the whole school answering unnecessary questions. I so much hate looking at the crowd”. It felt easy telling her the truth, and that’s because I know she understands me and she doesn’t judge me too.
“then don’t look at the crowd. you just need to be there with your friends after all you were in it together”. she said then stood and stretched her hand again to pull me up but I was hesitant. Sharon was right, I had to be there with the others, if not anyone else but for Kelvin. If it wasn’t him my case might have been worse than Kingsley’s so, I had to face whatever it was with him. I took her hand and we walked out of class. we got to the Assembly ground just as the Champlain was summarising her prayers, a minute late and we would have been held for lateness. the principal came out immediately, she was looking fierce today and I was so worried about what she had in mind.

she started addressing other issues in school, lateness, orderliness, disobedience, school fees and other things she normally repeated every single day, that was her method ” the hot topics always come last”.

She came to ours, and we were asked to come out. Kelvin and Bully might have given her our names because she called us all by names looking into her book. I was the last to come out after delaying for a while then she started narrating her own account of what happened yesterday to the students and after that she asked us to tell the school what happened. they all started talking at the same time except me, I was just staring at the floor. The principal asked them to stop and let one person speak then Kelvin told them what we’d all agreed to say. Principal asked us if it was the truth and we all nodded. It was easier than I expected, she kept quiet for a moment then started advising us and cautioning us at the same time. She said that what happened to us should be a lesson to the whole school to know where to follow and where not to. After the whole sermon she dismissed us saying she might send for us again for more investigations. We all knew it was going to be a busy day after all.

We’ve only had two classes when we were sent for again by the principal. On getting to her office, we met a man and a woman, they were certainly a couple from the way they sat. Kelvin signaled us that they were Kingsley’s parents and we all behaved, brought out our innocent faces. There were three other men standing at their back which later turned out to be policemen. Kingsley’s mum smiled at Kelvin and Bully once she saw them. She stood up and hugged them before she sat down.

“Boys these people here are Kingsley’s parents and the men they came with are policemen from Area B command kpiri kpiri”. The principal introduced. Once I heard police I became scared, it was obvious I wasn’t the only one scared because others were already shivering.

” you lads shouldn’t be scared, they’re not here to arrest you after all you didn’t do any wrong, did you?”. Kingsley’s father asked us and we all waved our head in unison.
“Good, they’re only here learn what happened to y’all and your friend Kingsley yesterday in order to help them catch the culprits or wouldn’t you want that?”.

“We do”. We chorused a reply and he smiled.

” exactly, so y’all will follow them to the station to narrate what happened and after that they’ll bring you back to school “. He summarized and we all nodded. My headache started again all of a sudden. I helped my self with a seat without being asked to, Kelvin saw the condition I was in and asked that I should be left behind. The principal asked me to go to the clinic, just as I was heading outside I met Chidimma and Sharon going to the v.p Academics office but their eyes were directed at the principal’s office. Once they saw me they both ran up to me.

” hey young man”. Chidimma said once they got to where I stood, I forced out a smile too but they noticed.

“The headache again huh?” Sharon asked me and I nodded.

“Let’s go to the clinic”. Chidimma said and they grabbed my two hands as we walked to the clinic. I was just smiling inwardly as they Both held me on each hand and I remembered what Miriam had tagged us yesterday and I couldn’t help but laugh. They both gave me an inquisitive stare, I would’ve told them what was making me laugh but, this little I just laughed had increased my headache and I sighed out in pain.

“Whatsoever is making you laugh, has got to wait”. Sharon said and we started walking again.

” so, why were you headed to the V.P’s office?”. I asked.

“To get a new marker”. They chorused and laughed at themselves while I just smiled.
” you both going to get one marker? That’s funny”.

“Okay, you want to know the truth? We were worried about you guys”. Sharon said and Chidimma laughed.

” Sharon? You were worried about him not all of them, remember?”. Chidimma said and laughed the more.

“Yeah, as if you were excluded”. Sharon said and pouted her lips.

” okay enough of the confessions, you can go take the marker now.”. I said as we got to the clinic but Chidimma disagreed.

“No, I’ll go take the marker, your girlfriend can stay here “. She said.

” Chidimma!! “. Sharon shouted and Chidimma laughed.

” come on you both had better stop this your hide and seek games….”. I cut her short before she could finish.

“Chy see you in class”. I said and walked into the clinic, Sharon followed me. The nurse asked me to sit down on the sickbed and I did, Sharon came and sat close to me.

” Sharon, you shouldn’t be here”. I said to her and she smiled.

“Oh, really? Same with you”. She said smiling at me.

” no am serious, I can’t let you miss lessons because of me”. She folded her hands and looked at me in a weird way.

“Am not complaining”.
” I know you’re not but I am and i insist you go back to class now” . she kept staring at me for a while without saying anything, she seemed not to like what I said. But, I didn’t really ask her to go back to class because of lessons but her over caring towards me was making it seem like I was a baby or something, at least that was how it made me feel. she stood up to leave after a while and I called her back, she turned immediately.

” Are you upset?”. I asked her and she faked a smile.

“it doesn’t matter, does it?”. she replied me with a question and I sighed out loudly.
” well, I just hope you understand “.
” yeah I do, I should be taking my studies seriously “.

” Sharon…”. I tried saying something but she cut me short.
” you know you’re beginning to sound like my mum. my main reason for being in school is to study right?”. she asked putting up another fake smile. I couldn’t say anything but just stare at her.
“yeah I guess so”. she shook her head and left. I was so speechless as I sat there watching her leave, I already have an apology to tender once I left here. Even the clinic nurse couldn’t hide her amazement at the little drama we just acted, she was just staring with her mouth ajar, she only caught her self when I turned to her and she started smiling sheepishly as she brought out tablets to give to me.
