Sharon - Season 1 - Episode 30

As I walked home that day I thought about what I’d say to my parents, how they would react, especially my dad would be willing to follow me to school the next day to see the person that wants to kill his pet son. Forget it, that am his pet son doesn’t give me any immunity from his punishments in fact am the one he disciplines the most. Reaching our house the headache started again, this time more intense than before. I screamed out and managed to sit down on our compound’s pavement. My sister ran out when she heard my voice to meet me in a “sorry” state and she screamed too.

“Oh my God!”. She screamed then came to help me up.

” Nwachukwu who did this to you”. She asked as she helped me climb the pavement into our apartment, that was the only moment I felt free to cry and I shed tears freely on her shoulder as I groaned in pain. She led me to the room I shared with my two brothers, once we got in I climbed the bed without even taking off my uniform. She kept asking what happened and The only response I gave her was: “my head, my head”. She went into her room and brought two pieces of boska tablets and a cup of water. I swallowed the medicine almost immediately it got to my hand then drank water. She left and came back with a plate of porridge yam, i ate slowly and she just sat there watching me. Once I was done eating, I la!d back and slept off immediately.

Kelvin and Bully were the ones that woke me up in the evening, they were still in their uniform. I asked them about Kingsley and they said he has woken up, he was doing well and he was going to be discharged in two days. I asked them what they told my sister because I knew She wasn’t just going to let them through without knowing who did this to me.

” the same thing we’re all going to say tomorrow “. Kelvin said. I got up and realized I wasn’t wearing my uniform anymore but, just my underwear. I didn’t need to bother because I already know who’d take care of it so, I started getting dressed.

“so what’re we going To say”. I asked as I wore my short jean.

“It’s simple that we were going home through our normal shortcut route, then we were attacked by some boys smoking around the area”. Kelvin said and I nodded. When I was ready, I told my sister I wanted to escort my friends out. First she didn’t agree because of my condition but I insisted I was okay then she let me go with them. We went to the other outlawz’s compound one by one to inform them too and anybody we visited will join us too. The last place we went was captain’s house, he seemed to still be afraid of what had happened earlier and when we told him about what happened to Kingsley he panicked the more. There and then he denounced being an outlaw, that he would never roll with us anymore even though he is still our friend and we accepted. That’s the difference between us and cultists, we did not force people to join us neither did we hold them against their will when they chooses to leave. He also agreed to tell the Same story with us. We dispersed after that. I went home to meet interrogation from my dad again. He was furious when I told him what we’d planned to say tomorrow, he said he was going to come to our school to get a better explanation but my sister told him not to worry that she would go herself and he agreed. My dad was a trader too like my mother but his was quite a busy type. He sold foodstuffs like ogbono, melon, thickener and pepper in bags and he also had boys that sells in retail for him too. So he was quite a busy man and my sister didn’t feel like he should just leave his business because of this or she was just her curious self. My mum was just different, she wasn’t so curious to know what happened but she pampered me throughout the day, in the night she pressed my head with hot water and nursed the wound herself. She even asked me not to go to school the next day because of my headache but, I refused.
Wednesday morning my mum prepared me for school herself, my sister replaced her in the Shop. I didn’t need to wash plates and also she gave me extra money for bike so, I left early for school after eating rice and sauce specially cooked by mum.

Kelvin and Bully were already in school when I came which was unusual but not surprising to me because we all knew how busy the day was going to be. They were sitting outside with ugochi when I came. I met them and we exchanged greetings then I went into our class and dropped my school bag. I joined them outside, they were still talking about yesterday.

“We lose guard oh, we for no fakshi Kinsman as we dey disembark”. Bully said stamping his leg on the ground repeatedly.
” but una been no get choice nah”. Ugochi said. She loves speaking pigdin mostly around us. Kelvin stared at her intensely like she had said something wrong and she crossed her finger on her lips.

“Na true say we lose guard yesterday, but na yarn for another time, make this one die down first”. Kelvin spoke and we all nodded. We all sat there in silence, our Class mate’s that came early kept joining us, the outlawz that don’t trek home with us wanted to know what happened but non of us said anything to them. After a while, Someone covered my eyes with her hands from behind. I didn’t know who it was and everybody had become quiet, I guess the person at my back had asked them not to say a word so, it was now left for me to solve the puzzle. I tried getting hold of her, but she kept shifting. I smelt her hands and I smiled to myself. It was the same cream fragrance with the girl that’d babysat my injured head yesterday. When I realized it was Sharon, I stopped struggling, she rested her jaw on my head and giggled a little.

“Are you not tired already?”. I said and our classmates laughed, she held back hers. Maybe they all thought I hadn’t figured out who the mystery girl was so, I decided to say her name.

“Sharon”. I said confidently and they all started laughing and shouting again. She left me and ran into the class and I just sat there smiling with the Others rather than chase after. Kelvin came and sat close to me then, crossed his left hand around my shoulder.
“I see say una don dey rap again”. He said smiling at me, I smiled too then shrugged and he nodded.

“Na now be the right time”. He said patting my shoulder then looked me in the eye.
“Do not hesitate”. Was the last thing he said before he stood up and left. Shortly after, the bell for assembly was rang. Before today I had never been called out in the Assembly before for any reason and I so much hated facing the crowd, that reason was enough for me to be scared of today’s Assembly so, I went into our class to hide the moment I heard the bell. On getting into our class I collided with Sharon, we both laughed as I caught her in my arms, then there was this silence as we both stared into each other’s eyes. ” Na now be the right time, do not hesitate”. Kelvin’s words was all I could think as I held her close but I was hesitating already.
“Ehem”. Sharon faked a cough smiling at me.
