The Private Driver (The 6th Month)

The next day after Ojo was informed that Dami had taken in, he placed a phone call to her and the conversation was lively, at least for Ojo, but not for Dami. She did not expect the reaction she got from her mother-in-law, and now, her husband who was overwhelmed with joy hearing that she was expecting a baby. From that day, she suspected that there was something her husband and his family were not telling her.

"I'm so happy to hear that I will soon become a father. I can't wait to return to Nigeria and carry my baby. I could not sleep yesterday night after I heard the good news. My heart was bursting with so much joy that I stayed awake until this morning." Ojo's voice was shaking and Dami could feel it over the phone.

"I have never felt this happy in my life. Today will count as one of the happiest days of my life. This is the day I learned that I'm going to be a father. My love, I thank you so much for accepting to be my wife and for carrying my baby." Ojo said to Dami who was listening to him with absolute silence.

She wanted to talk but didn't know exactly what to say to her husband. She wanted to ask him what was going on, but she couldn't muster the needed courage to do so.

It was one of those moments when you feel like confessing your sins, but lack the courage to say what happened. Dami wanted to tell her husband that he was not the father of the baby in her womb, but that would also mean broadcasting her treacherous acts with Kenny, the private driver.

For many minutes, she just listened to her husband without saying 'pim.'

"My love why are you so quiet? Are you okay? Is the baby disturbing you? Tell the baby that daddy is saying hi. Tell the baby no to disturb my wife. Please, speak to me, I want to hear your voice." Ojo continued to talk and demanded that Dami should at least say something to show that she was happy.

"I'm happy too my love. Why will I not be happy? I feel blessed by God who has given me the fruit of the womb in the first year of my marriage." Dami responded to her husband. Whatever she was saying was not coming from her heart. She knew she was telling lies. Deep within her heart, she was trying to know why her husband and mother-in-law were so happy over her pregnant.

"Why are they celebrating? My husband cannot tell me that he is not aware that the baby is not his own. I did not even spend a single night with him after our wedding. How come he is thinking the baby belongs to him? Right now, I'm totally confused." Dami remarked to Kenny later in the evening when her mother-in-law had gone outside of the building to receive fresh air. The old woman was sitting under a shade and sipping her wine, so it was an opportunity for Dami and Kenny to have good conversation.

"I'm also confused. You said he never touched you even once?" Kenny asked Dami.

"Yes! Even when we were dating, he refused to touch me because he insisted that we are Christians and therefore, must wait until marriage before he would brows my internet. No matter how hard I tried, he refused to log into my portal throughout the one year we were dating. It was so strange that I began to think his system is not brining network." Dami said with a smile, but it was not a laughing matter.

She was actually seriously worried. While it is true that she no longer had to worry about her pregnancy, she was troubled because her husband and his family willingly accepted the pregnancy, despite the fact that she cheated and took with another man.

"In my opinion, it is very strange. It is not something you should be laughing about. This problem is big enough to ruin your marriage, because it seems there is something your husband is hiding from you." Kenny responded in a calm way. Both of them were sitting in the living room.

"When you say he is hiding something, what do you mean?

What do you think could be the problem?" Dami enquired from Kenny, hoping to get some manly opinion.

"Look, I will not tell you lies, but it is hard for a young man with full network connection in his system to resist the temptation to brows his woman's website for two years. It is either he did not love you or something else. I think you should find out fast what is going on and take action. Act fast before it is too late." Kenny remarked with concern.

"I don't know what to do. The worse is that he is not even living in Nigeria for me to get the opportunity to ask what's going on face to face.

"Dami said softly.

"I decide to keep the baby, and now, look at the result. If I had known, I would have done something about the pregnancy early enough." Said Dami.

"There is no need to regret your past actions. You were trying to do what's best for your family. I'm sure everything would be resolved for good." Kenny said resignedly as if he did not know how best to advise Dami again. It was a very confusing situation.

"How can you say it would be resolved for good? My marriage is already scattering and I can't help to save it. First, my husband disappeared to London and left me here in Benin, not even spending one night with me. And now, I'm pregnant after allowing you to illegally log into my portal. What we did was wrong and I'm facing the consequences." Dami said with a sad face."

"But I know how to deal with this." Dami said after thinking for a while. It was as if an idea breezed into her head.

"What are you going to do?" Kenny asked.

"You will see." Dami tells Kenny.
